   If all you ever expect him to need it for is small projects (e.g. – drilling holes to hang pictures, lights, grab-bars, etc.) around an apartment go for the cheapest cordless you can get.
   HOWEVER, If he’ll be doing bigger projects (e.g. – building a deck, installing sheetrock, etc.) now or in the future, you want something better than the cheapest thing available.
   I prefer the B&D power tools over Craftsman. With either brand, get the 18 volt as it’s more poweful. It’s better to spend more at the start rather than buying a less expensive item now and later having to buy the more expensive one when the first one can’t handle the job.
   Depending on how and where he will use it, you may be able to get by with a corded, rather than cordless, drill. If that would work you could use the savings to buy a nice set of drill bits, a long extension cord and other accessories. And if having to use a cord isn’t a problem, you should know that a corded drill is generally going to be more poweful than any cordless drill.
   My corded Craftsman drill burned out earlier than I think was appropriate. I replaced it with a corded B&D model and am very pleased. It’s unusual that a corded drill doesn’t cover all of my needs when accompanied with a 100 foot heavy duty extension cord. Cordless is more for convenience.
   I have an 18-volt Cummings cordless that I really like (and an extra battery for it which is important if you go cordless and expect to use it heavily on any given project). DeWalt is also great.
   To answer your specific questions, I’ve just had better luck with B&D than Craftsman. (It’s kind of like a Chevy truck versus Ford truck thing – guys just tend to develop their own preferences.) And there is quite a bit of difference between the 12- and 18-volt cordless models when doing “real” work, so go for the 18-volt if it will ever be needed.
   An 18-volt cordless in either brand should make any guy happy. I just happen to prefer B&D and corded, rather than cordless, drills.

   If you want to marry him buy a Dewalt.12 volt is good enough for around the house.18 volt is for real projects.

   Yhe craftsman is always better, only because it has a life time guarentee. The Black and Decker is good as well, don’t know about their policies. Anything craftsman is good.

   I have 18 V Ryobi and swear by it.
   Craftsman is a great guarantee. But I would find out his preference.
