I bough this book thinking it was going to be great. To my surprise the book has colorless pictures. Not only that, i tried to make arroz con leche as my first recepe from the book and it came out horrible. It calls for too much sugar and too much milk. Horrible instructions.

I just couldn’t believe I had found those flavors that I missed so much, and I made it myself thanks to this wonderful book. It is perfect if you live abroad and have limited access to some ingredients, she perfectly used those that you find in the market. I have many Colombian cooking books but always ended up being frustrated until I found this book. I just wished it had more pictures.

  3. Lillian M. Matthews Says:

I grew up in Colombia eating most of the foods in the book, often asking for recipes, but being told by the cooks, even my mom, “a pinch of this, a bit of that” and never knowing if it was going to turn out right when I cooked it. Many of the cookbooks I looked at (even in Colombia) either had strange recipes that I would never cook in a million years, were so darn complicated that it made me tired just to read the recipe, or were so pretentious as to be a total turn-off. This book gives ONLY recipes that every Colombian eats on a daily basis either at home or on the street. The ingredients are kept to a necessary minimum (no extra stuff to make it fancy), and the preparation is geared for home cooks, not professional chefs.

It is true that it would have been great to have more and better photographs, but I don’t miss them in this books because I carry those pictures in my head. All I have to do is see the written word, and puff!! there’s the full sensory experience; but those cooks who have never eaten, much less prepared the food may have trouble with the visualization thing, so they need the photos, but don’t let this small factor keep you away from this great cookbook.

Thanks to this book I can now cook and EAT foods such as Panderos, Almojabanas, Boyo de Mazorca and Torta de Maduro and all my other comfort foods. I love, love this book. I love it so much, that I am giving it for Christmas to all my gringo-colombian relatives.

In a nut shell……if you like Colombian food, and wish you could eat it on a regular basis but are unsure of how to cook it, then you need this book to help you along. You will not be disappointed.

The books got on time, great condition. It was more than I was expecting. Thanks!

Before I purchased this book I was reading a lot of reviews that were complaining about the book on how it lacked pictures. I do agree that it doesn’t have colorful pictures where you can base your cooking on but if you see past the pretty pictures, this book is amazing. It is very descriptive on each food and it gives you a history on each section you go into. The author of this book was very informative to explain to the reader why certain foods are cooked the way they are and what holiday, occasion, this food is prepared.

I’ve tried a couple of recipes from this book and they were phenomenal! I’m Colombian but was born and raised in the U.S. so I never really learned how to cook Colombian food. This book has been a great key to open the doors to Colombian food. It’s very easy to understand and did I mention the food is great? Buy it, you won’t be disappointed! Just skip all the pretty pictures and cook! :)
